Layering means wearing two fragrances together to create something that's yours alone. Done well, it also helps a scent last longer. Here's how to do it without ending up with a muddle.

The three rules of layering

1. Heavier scent first

Start with the richer fragrance — woods, vanilla, amber, oud — then add the lighter one on top. Spray light first and the heavy one will simply bury it.

2. Pair complementary notes

Woods work with spices and vanilla.
Florals work with musk and citrus.
Gourmands (sweet, edible notes) work with leather and oud.

3. You don't have to stack them

Put the richer scent on your chest and the lighter one on wrists and neck. They'll blend in the air around you.
